Baby Blake Sneak Preview – Car Seat Canopy

One of my dear friends just had a baby boy! And what makes it even more exciting is she struggled with infertility too! So this baby boy is long awaited and I couldn’t be happier for her and her family! But being the procrastinator that I am, I have yet to completely finish all his gifts and get them in the mail. But I wanted to give a sneak peak of one of the completed items.

Being a soon to be first time mom myself I am a little on the panic and paranoid side. I have waited way too long to have this baby that I don’t want anything to happen. This got me thinking about random people touching my baby and I remembered the car seat covers I am starting to see everywhere. What a perfect way to keep people out of my baby’s face and touching her. Well baby Blake also happens to live where it snows and it’s cold so this can do double duty - Block him from the bitter cold and strangers grubby hands!

I googled some tutorials just to get measurements and found a few like THIS, THIS and THIS. They were super helpful and I went to work doing my own thing since I am not so great at following patterns or directions. Thankfully I have a car seat my sister in law had given me several years ago so I was able to make sure it fit properly. Now I am just hoping that where I placed the straps is universal for all types of car seats. :/

Anyhow, I chose two coordinating blue, cream and brown cotton fabrics – I couldn’t resist that color combo! It’s my favorite for little boys. I used a yard of each and sewed them right sides together, turned them right side out and did a top stitch and sewed the straps the same way and added Velcro and sewed them securely to the canopy. I wanted it to be reversible so I added straps to both sides. It was super simple and I think it turned out lovely!

Now if I can only get my butt in gear and get the rest of the items sewn. I am sewing minky fabric for the first time and let me tell you… it’s a headache! It slides everywhere. I have used my seam ripper at least 3 times already on one project! So irritating!

It turned out really cute. A lady in my ward has a tutorial for that too, she also has a bunch of other projects that you would probably love. Her blog is on my list: hippos and dinosaurs. She just put up some felt flowers that I want to make.
